i was talking on the show last night about this photo of me surfing on a big boat. so here it is, to yr right. i'd like to turn this into a myspace style/confessional blog. you won't mind, will you tim? by the way, im just joking about that. while the urge is there, i'll stick to mp3s and music stuff for now.
here's a couple of mp3s for you to download. firstly, the animal collective, from their new album feels. all the reviews of this record have touted it's accesiblity and (more) conventional song structures. and stuff. it's really good, but i think i like sung tongs more, in all it's experimentalism. here's track two from the new album:
the animal collective - grass.mp3
something else really interesting is the new modest mouse covers album about to be released by sun kil moon. this guy plays really affected indie-folk - check out his album ghosts of the great highway. he was also a member of renowned red house painters, who play similar folky stuff. i'm hanging out for this new covers album, tiny cities. i'm trying to download the whole thing, and i'll be sure to play some on the show when i've got it. in the mean time, though, he's one track from it:
sun kil moon - ocean breathes salty.mp3
remember to come see me dj at capitol bar this friday night, the 28th. it should be a wild night. it's on hereford st and starts at 10pm - hot indie tunes til late, for free. wow!

Heh - nice photo Richard, but calling it surfing is a little misleading. Perhaps you were just trying to sound cool ;)
Anyway, going on from
the previous post -- I too recommend you all take the time to read the "Twee As Fuck" twee/indie pop article on Pitchfork - even if yr not into that kind of music, it's still really interesting in itself, and also in its relation to other musical styles/movements.bands. Currently downloading some artists I didn't have anything of - Beat Happening, Glo-Worm (they do a really nice cover of The Cure's "Friday I'm In Love") and Heavenly. Soulseek users should try to a file search of the room called "Twee Folks" as they have pretty much everything.
That's not a Franz Ferdinand reference in the title of your post, is it Richard?
Hmm, don't know about that Sun Kil Moon cover. Although it's been changed around a bit, Ocean Breathes Salty sounds a bit awkward as a folk tune. Actually, Modest Mouse are a bit of an awkward band, especially phrasing-wise, so they really don't lend themselves very well to such delicate coverage. I wish Mr Kozelek would get on with more of his own material…
By the way, Rich you are totally surfing that be-atch!
indeed it is a franz ferdinand reference. i must say, i do like that new album of theirs...
as for the sun kil moon cover, i think yr right gareth. this is kozelek's second covers album - the first being totally dedicated to AC/DC...hmm. dubious. he should stick to what he knows best, i think.
it's an interesting premise, at least. covers are always notoriously hard to pull off, i think. my favourite of this year would have to be the arcade fire covering the yeah yeah yeahs' "maps".
ooh, very nice. i give you a 7/10.
the three-piece suit is spiffy. veeerry spiffy. and you look squiffy. veeerry squiffy.
about Feels, well i tend to agree with you that it is a really nice record in itself and enjoyable to listen to, within the greater scope of the group's discography and the direction they are going in, it doesn't seem so good!
the majority of the tracks on Feels seem to be very similar, perhaps with the vipe of 'who could win a rabbit', they are nice individually but within the scope of the album just seems a bit too much of the same to me, when i think they could be doing much more interesting things than rewriting the type of songs from Sung Tongs which gave them a much bigger following. However having said that I really like the track 'loch raven' simply great =)
Re: Shea
I used to hang out in twee folks all the time, lots of cool people in there~ just incase you haven't got it I would recommend The Field Mice's retrospective compilation called Where'd You Learn to Kiss That Way? It is rather long, but contains tonnes of awesome stuff if you are inclined that way...
/wisheshecouldcometomixtapeconnection
<-- 'vibe'
"emma's house" by the field mice is the best song ever. i think i made the best sumer mix tape in the world...ever! this morning, in response to the wonderful weather. you should hear it.
Hey Digby - yeah I do have 'Where'd You Learn ... " -- really excellent compilation! "Love Emma's House" and also "If You Need Someone". Yeah the Twee Folks room is cool, they've got nearly everything mentioned in that Pitchfork article.
Heh, I made a cool summer mixtape the other day as well. It's quite long though, about 30 tracks - if you want a copy/playlist just ask me (haha ... this is so ... twee)
i'm going to draw a cartoon kitten to go on the front of the tape. hehe.
Not many hours until the mixtape connection. w00t!
Hey guys, we're totally "chatting" on the "intarwebs".
They should make Mixtape Connection all ages. Or at least an exception for me. heh.
oh well, at least I'm going to the Bats on Saturday!
This kind of late commentage is slightly pointless, but i shall proceed anyway.
Rich0rdz, you are totally flaring on that boat, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
I think you should also make an all ages mixtape connection! There are plenty of kids in
christchurch that need something to keep them occupied besides underage sex and robotussin.
Remember when there were all age gabber/jungle/trance parties? Well i don't see why electro
shouldn't do the same thing.Until then, those suckers can stay home,
and i'll see you at the mixtape connection tonight!
the underage thing is a good idea, actually. shea - why don't you organise one? i mean, anyone is capable of djing with this sort of stuff. that zebadee's place could work? (not that i've been there) or perhaps creation. otherwise, there's probably not any other venues, really.
and thanks, dylan - yr flaring all the time!
